Since Madonna broke ground with “Like a Virgin” and her other notable hits and controversies – female artists, especially pop artists, have moved toward a more free, more sexy look.

Many of the female artists in this collection started as ‘young’ pop singers and have grown into powerful yet sexy singers and/or bands. Many find this trend disturbing and I’m not sure where the ‘cut off’ should be. Such is freedom of expression.

Looking at the quick history… Hip-hop started out as a counter-culture expression of pain-laced, defiant joy by New York’s penniless and angry rappers. As women entered into the Hip-hop explosion they brought their own frustrations to the public arena and fought hard to carve out a niche for themselves. “A woman’s worth” – Alicia Keys (song lyrics at the end of this article) is a powerful song and sung by a beautiful woman, but this is only one side of the arena – the other side is the ‘sexy’, move it to the dance floor - musical genre. To be sure it’s about money, but it’s about something else as well.

Now, any musical genre that becomes so successful that it becomes the mainstream inevitably becomes homogenized, its own swollen girth obscuring beneath it many of its most talented originators. Indeed, many are those who have been loudly proclaimed hip-hops death for the last few decades. Yet hip-hop has not become commercially marginalized, nor has it run out of fresh, hungry artists with something to say and an interesting, original way of saying it. It’s quite the opposite in fact. It is just that hip-hop bears within its body of listeners not just the usual commercial/obscurest rift, but also a Movies strip-like cultural one and the two intersect.

It’s completely possible for a woman to be sexy, beautiful, classy and a top female performer: Case in point: Alicia Keys (bottom of page). But, hey - Nothing wrong with sexy…

TLC
TLC is an American music group, whose repertoire spanned R&B, hip hop and pop. Originally known as 2nd Nature, the group was formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1991 by Crystal Jones, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. Before signing to LaFace Records through a production deal with R&B singer Perri “Pebbles” Reid, the group’s name was changed to “TLC”, and soon after Crystal Jones was replaced by Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas.

The greatest girl group of all time, TLC has sold over 55 million records worldwide. Their second album, CrazySexyCool (1994), was one of the first albums to be awarded diamond certification by the RIAA for selling over 11 million copies. Billboard ranks the group as one of the greatest musical trios of all time[1]. The group was just as well-known for their controversy as well as their success, from their use of condoms as fashion accessories in the early 1990s, to Left-Eye’s troubles with both the law and disputes with her groupmates.

Just before the release of TLC’s fourth LP, 3D, Left Eye was killed in a car crash while on vacation in La Ceiba, Honduras. T-Boz and Chilli promoted 3D as a duo, and in 2005 hosted a reality television show, R U the Girl. The grand prize for R U the Girl, won by Tiffany “O’so Krispie” Baker, was a chance to record a song and perform once in concert with T-Boz and Chilli.

Fergie
Fergie : Stacy Ann Ferguson (born March 27, 1975), better known by her stage name Fergie, is an American pop/R&B singer-songwriter, actress and rapper. She is a former member of the kids’ television series Kids Incorporated, and the girl group Wild Orchid. Ferguson was also a co-host of the television show Great Pretenders. She is currently a vocalist for the hip hop/pop group the Black Eyed Peas, as well as a solo artist, releasing her debut album, The Dutchess, in 2006. The album has so far spawned three U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number one singles and five Top 5 hits, making The Dutchess the seventh album from a female artist to spawn five Top 5 hits.

Ferguson was a member of the female trio Wild Orchid, which she fronted with Stefanie Ridel and fellow Kids Incorporated star Renee Sandstrom. Wild Orchid released two albums, but after completing a third album, their record label declined to release it, and she left the group shortly thereafter. Her disappointment with Wild Orchid led to an addiction to crystal methamphetamine. In September 2006, Ferguson talked with Time about quitting her crystal meth addiction. “It was the hardest boyfriend I ever had to break up with,” she says. “It’s the drug that’s addicting. But it’s why you start doing it in the first place that’s interesting. A lot of it was being a child actor; I learned to suppress feelings.”

In 2003, the Black Eyed Peas were recording their third album, 2003’s Elephunk, when Will.i.am invited Fergie to try out for a song called Shut Up (Black Eyed Peas song). She got the gig and instantly bonded with the trio to record five additional songs on the album.

Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1970) is a multi-award winning, and critically acclaimed American pop and R&B singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. She made her recording debut in 1990 under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, and became the first recording artist to have her first five singles top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Following her marriage to Mottola in 1993, a series of hit records established her position as Columbia’s highest-selling act. According to Billboard magazine, she was the most successful artist of the 1990s in the United States.

Following her separation from Mottola in 1997 Carey introduced elements of hip hop into her album work. Her popularity was in decline when she left Columbia in 2001, and she was dropped by Virgin Records the following year after a highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown, as well as the poor reception given to Glitter, her film and soundtrack project. In 2002, Carey signed with Island Records, and after a relatively unsuccessful period, she returned to the forefront of pop music in 2005.

Carey was named the best-selling female pop artist of the millennium at the 2000 World Music Awards. She has recorded the most number-one singles—eighteen—for a solo artist in the United States, where, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, she is the third best-selling female recording artist. In addition to her commercial accomplishments, Carey has earned five Grammy Awards, and is well-known for her vocal range, power, melismatic style, and use of the whistle register.

‘A Woman’s Worth’

(Verse 1)
You could buy me diamonds
You could buy me pearls
Take me on a cruise around the world
Baby, you know I’m worth it
Dinner light by candles
Run my bubble bath
Make love tenderly to last, and last
Baby, you know I’m worth it

(Bridge)
Wanna’ please; wanna’ keep; wanna’ treat your
woman right?
Not just told, but to show, that she knows she’s
worth your time
You will loose, if you choose, to refuse to put her first
She will and she can find a man who knows her worth!
Mmmmmmmmm

(Chorus)
‘Cause a real man knows a real woman when he
sees her (when he sees her)
And a real woman knows a real man
Ain’t ‘fraid to please her (please her)
And a real woman knows a real man always
comes first (first)
And a real man just can’t deny
A woman’s worth

Mmmmmm hmmmmm (x1), Mmmmmm hmmmmm (x1), Mmmmmm hmmmmm (x1), Mmm

(Hold up)

(Verse 2)
If you treat me fairly
I’ll give you all my goods…
Treat you like a real woman should
Baby, I know you’re worth it
If you never play me
Promise not to bluff
I’ll hold you down when it gets rough
‘Cause baby, I know you’re worth it

(Bridge 2)
She rolls the mile; makes you smile, all the while
being true
Don’t take for granted the passions that she has
for you
You will lose, if you choose, to refuse to put her first
She will and she can find a man who knows
her worth!
…OH!

(Chorus)
‘Cause a real man knows a real woman when he
sees her (when he sees her)
And a real woman knows a real man
Ain’t ‘fraid to please her (please me)
And a real woman knows a real man always
comes first (first, baby)
And a real man just can’t deny
A woman’s worth

[Breakdown]
No need to read in between the lines
Spell it out for you (spell it out for you)
Just hear this song
‘Cause you can’t go wrong when you value(Better value…)
A woman’s, woman’s, woman’s, woman’s Worth! (yeah)

[Chorus (x2)]
‘Cause a real man knows a real woman when he
sees her (when he sees her[1st time]) (nothin’ like a woman’s worth [2nd time])
And a real woman knows a real man
Ain’t ‘fraid to please her (please me [1st time]) (ohhh, ooh [2nd time])
And a real woman knows a real man always
comes first (first, baby [1st time]) (comes first [2nd time])
And a real man just can’t deny
A woman’s worth (a woman’s worth)
